The Intersection of Clinical Psychology and Visual Narrative
Celestial Beings is a multidisciplinary visual exploration of the Bipolar Disorder (BD) spectrum, viewed through the dual lens of clinical psychology and fine-art photography. Drawing from my academic background in both fields, this series translates the complex internal architecture of BD into a tangible, visual dialogue.
In a landscape where mental health is often misunderstood, Celestial Beings serves as a high-concept bridge between the diagnostic and the deeply personal.
My goal with this work is to dismantle the stigma of BD by providing a sophisticated visual vocabulary for the invisible. By mixing psychological theory with high-end production, Celestial Beings transforms the "struggle" into a series of striking, narrative assets that demand both empathy and intellectual engagement.
The Concept: Duality and Identity
The series utilizes a recurring motif of celestial figures, angels and demons, to represent the radical duality of the psyche. This choice is twofold:
The Psychological Framework: Representing the "soaring highs and crushing lows" of the disorder, exploring themes of identity fragmentation, impulsivity, and the "Russian Roulette" of daily mood cycling.
The Cultural Reinterpretation: A subversion of the traditional Catholic iconography I was raised with in Costa Rica, recontextualizing religious "perfection" through the lens of mental health reality.
